Although the basis for producing training materials is instructional design, it goes beyond mere curriculum development. It is successful in creating learning experiences since it takes into account how tools of instruction should be conceived, designed, and presented to students.
An instructional designer uses learning theory to create course content, learning activities, and other training solutions that facilitate the acquisition of new knowledge or real-world skills. Instructional designers create all instructional materials for a training programme, such as presentation materials, participant guides, handouts, and job aids or other resources. They are also in charge of analysing training, determining what was taught, and whether the learning solution resulted in measurable behaviour changes.
Before beginning course design and development, an instructional designer conducts a needs assessment. This establishes the stakeholder objectives, if training is required, and the demands of the learning event. A needs assessment will determine what:
- Organisational aims and requirements.
- Knowledge, skills, and attitudes are required for tasks and competences.
- What the learner should be aware of and capable of doing as a result of their instruction.
- Learners’ needs and qualities.
Once an instructional designer has reviewed the needs assessment and understands the training objectives, the course production process may begin. The instructional design process entails choosing the best techniques, methodologies, learning activities, and technologies to maximise the learning experience and knowledge transfer.
